The Gloucester Griffins are the longest running Junior B Lacrosse Club in Ottawa. The Griffins have played continuously since their foundation in 1978. Incorporated in 1992, the Gloucester Griffins Junior Lacrosse Club is a not-for-profit group which provides an opportunity for graduating minor players to compete at an elite level in Ontario. The Club is a member in good standing in the Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA). The team participates in the Junior B Council which consists of 24 teams from Windsor to Ottawa.
During our history, we have played twice in the Quebec league. In 1979, Nepean dropped out of the Eastern Division of the Ontario Junior B League, leaving the remaining three teams to join Western Division in Quebec. In 1980, Cornwall also dropped out. That year the Griffins played two playoff series at the same time. As the highest ranking Eastern Ontario team, we played against the Beaches for the honour of attending the Founders' Cup. At the same time, we were competing with Kanawake for the Western Quebec Division championship and a berth in the Founders' Cup. We lost both series closely, as much because of fatigue as anything else.
In 1981, the entire Quebec Western Division folded except for Gloucester and Kanawake. Dave Smith petitioned the OLA and the Griffins were accepted into the Junior B Council. With the exception of another brief sojourn in Quebec during the 1988 and 1989 seasons, we have continued in the OLA Junior B Council. It should be noted that we were the Quebec League Champions during those years and represented Quebec in the Founders' Cup. Both years we finished Silver Metalists to Kitchener in 1988 and Orangeville in 1989
We have hosted the Founders' Cup in 1989 (on behalf of Quebec) and in 1991 (on behalf of Ontario). In all three of our Founders' Cup appearances, we have been Cup Finalists.
The Gloucester Griffins Junior Lacrosse Club depends upon its affiliated Gloucester Minor Lacrosse Association to develop the skilled players we require to compete. Lacrosse is again growing in Eastern Ottawa, the Minor Griffins currently provide approximately 600 youths from age 5-20 with the opportunity to learn lacrosse and develop their skills in at house league and competitive levels.
Note: Years 1979, 1980, 1988 and 1989 were played in the Quebec League. Player stats for these years are currently unavailable.
